Plant Care Guidelines

Adaptation:
Throughout the United States.

Planting Time:
See
Earliest Dates for Spring Planting of Vegetables.

Planting Method:
Plant peas 1 to 2 inches deep and 1 to 4 inches apart directly in the soil outdoors. Do not thin.

Soil:
Any good garden soil. pH 5.5 to 7.5.

Fertilizer:
At planting time, use 3 pounds of 10-10-10 fertilizer per 100 square feet, or 1 pound per 25-foot row. Side-dress every 3 to 4 weeks with 1 pound per 25-foot row.

Water:
How much: Apply enough water to wet the soil 8 to 10 inches deep.

How often: Water when the soil 1 inch deep is barely moist.

Harvest:
Garden peas: Pick as soon as the peas fill the pods. Pods should be tender and bright green. Faded pods are overmature, and peas inside will be tough and starchy.

Edible podded peas: Harvest pods when peas inside just begin to form and pods are tender and bright green.

Southern or blackeye peas: Pick when the pods change from deep green to light yellow, silver, red, or purple, depending on the variety. Seeds inside should be fully developed but not hard.
